Bathing-suit season is a phrase that sends shivers up many a spine. Whether conservative or flashy, beaching it up requires the right garb, which can be very tricky to find. With the sun blazing and the cool winds dwindling, the time to hit the sand, or poolside, is upon us all. The following is an insider’s list of where to find the right, flattering, fabulous swimwear to splash around in all summer.
Modest
Even the most covered-up woman can enjoy a day out in the sun! This summer, SunWay has put out a line of conservative bathing suits for the modest woman. The brainchild of Anat Yahav, founder and CEO of SunWay, the company offers protective bathing suits and accessories for the entire family. Endorsed by the Israel Cancer Association, SunWay is all about safe fun in the sun.
Yahav’s imported UV resistant Australian fabrics are cut from the same rolls as surf and scuba suits. The suits are long lasting, water-ready and environmentally friendly. The Women Only line consists of long and short-sleeved tops, pants and dresses. All the pieces can be mixed and matched and come in a variety of vibrant colors. Suits run from NIS 400 to NIS 600. SunWay can be purchased online at www.sunwayuvclothing.com.
Retro
If what you’ve been after is a bit of Betty Page pin-up glamour, this summer is the season to shine. With high waistlines hitting the beach, the retro-beach look is back with a vengeance. Designer Gal Angel of the six-year-old label Ugly Duckling has dreamed up a line of fantastic bathing suits worthy of an appearance on Mad Men. Angel is an expert in undergarments, leisurewear and bathing suits. Her clothing brings together classic lines with a sense of humor. Angel’s current men’s and women’s swimwear collections boast bright colors and patterns, from stripes to florals as well as classic solids.
Men’s trunks start at NIS 400, women’s bikinis and one-pieces start at NIS 550. Ugly Duckling can be purchased online at www.gal-angel.com. Studio visits can be scheduled in advance.
High Fashion
Scandinavia and warm weather don’t often get uttered in the same sentence.
And yet, the chilly shores of Denmark have fostered the gorgeous suits of North. Truly minimalist, North’s one-pieces and bikinis come in one shade, black. The suits are delicately cut (no Brazilian bottoms here) and thoughtfully sewn to handle sand, sun and water. Bathing suits run from NIS 650 for one-pieces and NIS 350 for each part of a bikini. The line is available on www.ludovig.com.
Local
This summer, Israeli fashion house Castro teamed up with high-end designer Gideon Oberson to develop the ultimate swimwear line. Oberson’s line has offered impeccable swimwear for many years and is a member of the international Gottex Models Ltd. family. To Castro, Oberson brought his understanding of the female body. The line includes a few bold prints, mainly in black and white, pops of color and a bit of sheen.
The shapes range from skimpier bikinis to modest one-pieces. The pieces start at NIS 199 and go up to NIS 349. Bathing suits are available at Castro stores throughout Israel and on www.castro.com.
Trendy
If you like to switch looks each season, Turkiz offers an endless list of different styles from string bikinis to beach skirts.
Virtually every cut and color is represented in the Turkiz and Turkiz Blush lines this summer. If it’s urban, retro, romantic, sexy or classic that you are after, they’ve got it. Behind each Turkiz suit stands designer Michal Weinberg. A graduate of Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Weinberg cut her teeth creating swimwear for the Parisian label Rasurel.
The suits are on sale in Hamashbir Lazarchan stores around Israel, Gottex stores, Aphrodita and more. Prices range from NIS 199 to NIS 399.
One-of-a-kind
Tired of holding “who wore it best” competitions in your mind? If you are looking for a suit that you can be sure you won’t see on another lady, Cala has just the ticket. This summer, the Cala designers have taken the scissors to vintage bathing suits in order to reconstruct the perfect swimwear line. Each suit has been handcrafted from vintage fabric and is one-of-a-kind. The colors and prints are truly unique and the cuts are flattering and nostalgic. Both bikinis and one-pieces are available, starting at NIS 240. The swimwear line is on sale at Cala stores throughout Israel and at www.calafashion.co.il.
