Penetrating judgment in unwanted pregnancy case

A judge in Haifa's Court for Family Matters has rejected a man's petition to force a woman he impregnated to undergo an abortion, reports In an unusual case, the judge ruled that the woman's right to decide what to do with her own body and to have a baby outweighed the man's right not to have an unwanted child. According to the report, the 21-year-old man claimed that the 26-year-old woman's pregnancy had occurred by fraud, saying she had seduced him after getting him drunk on a bottle of wine. But judge Ela Meiras said it was a woman's right to decide what to do with her body and no court could force her to have an abortion. The judge said that men too had a responsibility to prevent unwanted pregnancies, and the man should have used a contraceptive.
