The Tel Aviv District Planning and Construction Committee has approved the demolition of the Astor Hotel in central Tel Aviv and its replacement by a new hotel tower, reports www.local.co.il. The committee approved the tearing down of the 60-room, six-story hotel on the corner of Rehovot Hayarkon and Frishman, and its replacement by a 161-room, 22-story hotel complete with an indoor swimming pool.
According to the report, the committee approved the plans for the 1.5-dunam site subject to "green" building regulations, ordering that the pedestrian passage in Rehov Frishman be widened by five meters and that trees be planted along 10 meters of it. The plans call for a total of 6,300 square meters of construction above the lobby, 700 square meters of construction under the lobby, 750 square meters of balconies and 450 square meters for other areas, including the pool. No schedule for the work was reported.
