Abbas says talks on unity gov't must continue

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday said negotiations on forming a Palestinian unity government with the rival Hamas movement must continue. Earlier, Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas said the unity negotiations had been suspended following an apparent Israeli tank strike that killed 18 civilians in northern Gaza. Abbas, a moderate, has been pressuring the ruling Hamas group to join his Fatah movement in a coalition. Abbas hopes a more moderate unity government will be able to end international sanctions against the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority.
