US Republican leadership in Israel have raised concerns over severe threats facing the Druze community in southern Syria, particularly in the Suwayda region, which is home to Syria’s largest Druze population amounting to hundreds of thousands of Druze.
On Sunday, Attorney Marc Zell, Chairman of Republicans Overseas Israel and Vice President & General Counsel of Republicans Overseas, met with Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif, the spiritual leader of Israel's Druze community, to discuss the escalating crisis.
"Druze community leaders presented us with alarming reports about terrorist forces linked to Jabhat al-Nusra threatening innocent Druze populations," stated Attorney Zell following the meeting.
He emphasized the unity and loyalty of the Druze community in Israel and worldwide, asserting that "our responsibility is to convey relevant information to the Trump Administration and the American Congress. We are working to mobilize essential American support to protect the Druze community from threats and terrorist actions."
Zell further elaborated on these actions, stating, "I am communicating with Trump Administration officials and members of Congress to ensure the United States is aware of the developing situation and can act to prevent harm to innocent civilian populations." He underscored the long-standing alliance, declaring, "The Druze are faithful allies of Israel and the United States, and we will not stand by while they face threats."
The meeting, which also included Ariel Sender, Chief of Staff of Republicans Overseas Israel, and other party officials, concluded with a commitment from Republicans Overseas Israel to continue monitoring the situation closely.
Americans will continue to support Syrian Druze community
They will persist in their efforts to prompt American support to prevent harm to the Druze community in Syria, maintaining ongoing contact with Druze leadership in Israel.
The call for international protection comes amidst recent reports of intensified clashes in Suwayda, with casualties among both Druze and Bedouin factions, and concerns about sectarian tensions.
