The scheduled meeting between US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya in Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday was canceled due to Israeli pressure, Palestinian sources told the Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese outlet Al Mayadeen.
The official told the Saudi outlet that Hamas would be listening to the American administration's plans to implement US President Donald Trump's Gaza deal.
Hamas reportedly intended to discuss its own ideas regarding "practical implementation" of the deal.
Talking points may have included reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, a full IDF withdrawal, and the creation of a new political force in Gaza, A-Sharq reported.
Hamas claims disarmament was not negotiated
The reported cancellation of the meeting comes after senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan claimed on Monday that Hamas disarmament was not a part of the original US-led negotiations for the deal.
Hamdan told the Qatar-based outlet Al Jazeera Mubasher that "no clause regarding the disarmament of the resistance was on the table in the Sharm El-Sheikh negotiations."
Hamas also expressed dissatisfaction with the United Nations Security Council's passing of a US-proposed resolution that aimed to establish an International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gaza, claiming in a statement that disarming Hamas and allowing the ISF to operate within Gaza would "strip [the ISF] of its neutrality."
