The Afghan Taliban government said on Tuesday it has decided to release US detainee Dennis Coyle in response to a request from his mother.

"The foreign minister said that after a letter from the detainee's family ... the Supreme Court ... deemed the period of his detention sufficient and decided to release him," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Coyle was detained for violating Afghanistan’s applicable laws, according to the statement, and his liberation was done in order to "strengthen trust between countries."

The ministry also said that it hoped both the US and Afghanistan would "resolve their remaining issues through understanding and constructive dialogue."

This is a developing story.
