Kuwait's Foreign Affairs Ministry summoned Iran's Chargé d'Affaires to Kuwait City on Wednesday after the Islamic Republic targeted the country's airport in missile strikes early that morning.

In a statement on X, the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry said it had declared two members of Iran's diplomatic mission to the country persona non grata and demanded their departure within 24 hours.

Kuwait's Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Suleiman Al-Mashaan pressed its "strongest denunciation of the heinous Iranian attacks."

After the strikes on the airport and additional strikes in the region, Iran said that Kuwait and Bahrain bore "direct and clear responsibility" for the attacks, alleging their territory and facilities had been used to support US military operations against Iran.

In return, Al-Mashaan slammed Iran's claims as "baseless and unsupported by any evidence," and added that the "repetition of such allegations can in no way justify the attacks on Kuwaiti territory and its civilian and vital facilities."

What happened at Kuwait's airport?

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Iran attacked Kuwait's airport and damaged "vital facilities, including diplomatic missions."

The attack killed one person and injured a total of 63.

On Tuesday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) shot a missile into the control room of an empty oil tanker that was headed to an Iranian port.

According to CENTCOM, US forces issued repeated warnings to the crew of the Botswana-flagged vessel over the course of 24 hours as it sailed towards Iran’s Kharg Island.

To stop the tanker from reaching Iran, a US aircraft fired a missile into the vessel’s engine room, disabling it.
