Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti, serving multiple prison sentences in an Israeli prison over terror activities, said there is no point in holding Palestinian elections before Hamas and Fatah reconcile, according to Agence France Presse.
In an interview conducted by correspondence with the news agency, Barghouti, who led Fatah-offshoot Tanzim and coordinated several terror attacks against Israel, wrote that Palestinian presidential and parliamentary elections should only be held "in the context of a complete national agreement."
Barghouti said that elections would be worthless unless they are held in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
Barghouti's name has been raised as one of the prisoners who may potentially be released in a future prisoner exchange deal for kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Schalit.
He is also seen as a potential successor to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and in past interviews remained unclear on whether he coveted the position.
