British foreign secretary condemns Gemayel killing

Britain's foreign secretary condemned the assassination of the Lebanese industry minister on Tuesday, saying the killing could stir tensions in the volatile region. Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said the killing of Pierre Gemayel, a Christian politician who had strongly criticized Syria, "went against the interests of every single person" in the Middle East. "Clearly we condemn it, we are dismayed," said Beckett, standing with Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Tzipi Livni, who was visiting London. "There are enough problems in Lebanon already." Beckett said it was too soon to establish who might have been behind the killing.
