About 200 homeless residents staged a protest against government negligence and demanded new housing after a fire burned down their entire Cairo shanty town, police said Wednesday.
A fire engulfed the poverty stricken Qalaat el-Kabash, in downtown Cairo and destroyed some 250 wooden and cardboard shacks on Tuesday, leaving about 1,000 people homeless.
Eighteen people were injured in the fire.
Police officials said the protesters at the parliament's building Wednesday wanted the government to provide them with emergency housing after many of the families spent their night in mosques or with friends.
