Denmark appoints special envoy to Middle East

Denmark appointed a special emissary to the Middle East in recent days. The new envoy, Christian Hope, previously served as the Danish ambassador to Turkey. The appointment of the special envoy came in the wake of concern in Copenhagen over the country's image following the publication of caricatures ridiculing the prophet Muhammad. The publication of the caricatures led to a wave of violent demonstrations throughout Europe and the Muslim world, while several Arab states went so far as to recall their ambassadors. Some two weeks ago, Denmark decided not to press charges against the paper that first published the caricatures.
