Dozens killed in Iraqi raid on insurgent base

Iraqi commandos backed by US aircraft raided a Sunni insurgent base Saturday north of Baghdad, killing dozens, an Interior Ministry spokesman said. Local authorities said six children and their father were among the dead. The US military said it had no report about the attack, which the Iraqis said occurred near Tarmiyah, the site of a bold daylight assault against a US combat post that killed two American soldiers and wounded 17 nearly a week ago. The Interior Ministry commandos met fierce resistance after they stormed a base in the Mashhadah area near Tarmiyah about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, backed by US helicopters, spokesman Brig. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said. Dozens of suspected members of the Islamic Army in Iraq were killed in a two-hour firefight, he said, adding he could not be more specific about the number of casualties. Khalaf said he was unaware of civilian deaths.
