Fatah lawmaker assaults senior Palestinian official in Ramallah
Fatah officials say dispute between the two ruling faction representatives in West Bank was “personally motivated.”

A Fatah legislator on Wednesday physically assaulted Jibril Rajoub, chairman of the Palestinian Football Association and a former Palestinian Authority security commander, eyewitnesses said. The assault took place at Ramallah’s Grand Park Hotel, the eyewitnesses said.They added that Jamal Abu Rub, a Fatah legislator from Jenin, first slapped Rajoub before punching him twice in the face. Abu Rub is known for his nickname “Hitler.”Rajoub was in the hotel to attend a meeting with the Chinese foreign minister.The alleged assault by Abu Rub came a few weeks after Rajoub’s bodyguards reportedly beat him during an altercation at a meeting of top Fatah officials in Ramallah. The Ma’an news agency said that people who witnessed Wednesday’s attack managed to prevent Rajoub from hitting Abu Rub back. Both Rajoub and Abu Rub are senior representatives of the ruling Fatah faction in the West Bank.Fatah officials said that the dispute between the two men was “personally motivated.” The officials expressed fear that Wednesday’s violent incident at the Grand Park Hotel could deteriorate into a confrontation between supporters of the two men.
