Segolene Royal took her campaign to become France's first female president into the tumultuous Lebanese capital Thursday, launching a Middle East trip seen as a test of her foreign policy savvy.
Royal, candidate of France's opposition Socialist Party, was met at Beirut's international airport by officials and political leaders.
"I want to get to know directly the Lebanese reality and see what France's role could be in helping Lebanon to come out of the current crisis," Royal said in a statement Thursday.
Royal was visiting Lebanon at the invitation of the family of Pierre Gemayel, the industry minister who was assassinated last week, and because of recent instability in the country.
