Hamas officials said that six rival Palestinian leaders had been arrested for holding a political meeting in Gaza without a permit from the Hamas-run interior ministry.
The rival faction, Fatah, said that the men were detained for six hours but were released after mediation by Islamic Jihad and other groups. Among those arrested was Abdel-Rahman Hamad, a former minister in the Palestinian Authority.
Saturday's arrests come days before Fatah and Hamas officials are due to meet in Egypt for reconciliation talks on forming a unity government.
The Palestinians have had two rival administrations since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah-led government rules only the West Bank.
