According to the Middle East Military Balance published by the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies, Israel's military might, on paper, is superior to the combined forces of Syria and Lebanon.
The study said that Lebanon has a regular army of 61,400 soldiers; 350 tanks (mostly of the outdated T-54 model); 20 navy patrol craft, and 36 medium transport UH-1H helicopters. Lebanon is thought to have 6-8 MiG jet aircraft.
Syria has 289,000 soldiers; 4,800 tanks (higher quality T-72s), and 490 combat aircraft, including 105 MiG 29, 25 and 23 interceptor jets.
With its reserves mobilized, Israel has over 520,000 ground troops; 3,910 tanks (some 1,500 high quality Merkava models 1-4); and 470 combat aircraft, including 133 attack helicopters (Apache and Cobra) and 365 F-15 and F-16 advanced multi-role jets. (JB)
