Iran releases women detained for peaceful protest

Iran released 28 women activists on Thursday, the International Women's Day, but it kept three others in custody, said one of the women's lawyers. The detention of the 31 women during an orderly demonstration on Sunday was protested by international rights groups such as Human Rights Watch, which said it took "Iran's repression of peaceful activists to a new level." Security forces arrested the women as they protested the prosecution of five women activists, who are on trial for staging an illegal demonstration in Teheran last June. The five were among 200 women who demonstrated for legality, equality and the nullification of a law that allows Iranian men to have four wives.
