Iraq: Roadside bomb kills 5 police officers

A roadside bomb struck a police patrol south of Baghdad on Thursday, killing five officers and wounding two as they were on their way home from an operation with US forces, police said. The explosion occurred at about 7 a.m. on the main road between Hillah and Diwaniyah, according to an official. The police vehicle was destroyed in the blast, which left the five policemen dead and two others wounded, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information. Diwaniyah, 130 kilometers south of Baghdad, has been the site of heavy clashes between US-Iraqi security forces and Shiite militia fighters.
