Iraqi official: US transfers 8 former Saddam Hussein regime figures to Iraq

Iraq's deputy justice minister says eight former members of Saddam Hussein's regime have been transferred from US to Iraqi custody. Deputy minister Busho Ibrahim told The Associated Press on Sunday that former regime figures sentenced to death - like Saddam's cousin Ali Hassan al-Majid, better known as "Chemical Ali" for gassing Kurds in the 1980s - are not among those handed over to Iraqi custody. Ibrahim refused to elaborate or give names. But he says more defendants will be transferred to Iraqi custody in the future. The US military, which continues to hold dozens of former Iraqi government officials, did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.
