Key UN nations call for Palestinian state

The UN Security Council is calling for "renewed and urgent efforts" to create a Palestinian state existing peacefully alongside Israel. It also stressed Monday the urgency of an overall Mideast peace settlement. In a statement agreed by all 15 members and read at the end of an open ministerial meeting, the council said that "vigorous diplomatic action is needed" to achieve an overall settlement and a two-state solution. It also encouraged the Quartet of Mideast peacemakers - the UN, the U.S., Russia and the European Union - to continue their efforts to promote a comprehensive Mideast settlement.
