Jordan has commissioned a Norwegian firm to try and find out how many Iraqis are living in the kingdom and whether they are legal residents, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
The number of Iraqis who have fled to Jordan since their country was invaded in 2003 is not known. The United Nations has registered only 21,000 Iraqis as refugees, but it estimates that 750,000 Iraqis are in Jordan.
"The government is very interested in carrying out this survey, which will take several weeks, so we can find out the exact number and information of all the Iraqis who live in the kingdom," government spokesman Nasser Judeh told the official Petra news agency on Thursday.
The survey firm that won the contract is the Fafo Foundation, which was founded by the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions.
