Palestinians living in Lebanon's largest refugee camp have said they will form "Jihadi groups" to fight alongside an Islamic militant group battling the Lebanese army in another camp in the northern part of the country, according to an Internet statement posted Wednesday.
The statement, which purportedly was released by a group of Palestinian refugees living in the Ein el-Hilweh camp in southern Lebanon, said groups would be formed to fight the army in response to the ongoing battle at the Nahr el-Bared camp outside of Tripoli.
"Your brothers announce structuring Jihadi groups in Ein el-Hilweh to respond to the dire atrocities in Nahr el-Bared refugee camp," according to the statement.
The claim could not be independently verified, but it was posted on a Web site commonly used by Islamic extremists.
"We swear to God that the battle will be expanded if the crusaders and apostates continued their attack against our people in the north," the statement said.
