Jerusalem police banned a memorial to the late Palestinian official Faisal Husseini in east Jerusalem on Sunday - an event organized by the Palestinian Authority, police said.
The late-afternoon gathering attended by two dozen people, was broken up by police on the order of Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said.
Several Arab participants refused police orders and were forcibly dispersed, while Husseini's son was detained for questioning, police and eyewitnesses said.
According to the now-faded Oslo Accord, Palestinian political organization in east Jerusalem is forbidden. Since Hamas took over Gaza last year, police have forcibly prevented Palestinian political activity in that area.
Ir Amim, an Israeli watchdog group that advocates Palestinian rights in the city, strongly condemned the police action and said it was the 20th such Palestinian gathering that police had barred in east Jerusalem since peace talks resumed late last year.
"The police, at the instruction of the government, is acting like an elephant in a pottery shop, and is doing everything it can to inflame an already tense situation in the city," said Amos Gil, director-general of Ir Amim.
Husseini, who served as the PLO's top official in Jerusalem, died in 2001.
