A Syrian-based human rights group reported on Monday that a Syrian military court sentenced 50 Kurds to jail terms ranging from four to six months on charges related to a 2005 protest.
The National Organization for Human Rights in Syria (NOHR) said in a statement released Monday the Kurds were arrested in June 2005 for participating in a demonstration in the northeastern city of Qamishili to protest the assassination of a prominent Kurdish cleric.
NOHR said that the court passed the sentences on Sunday.
Syrian Kurds regularly complain of discrimination by the Damascus government, including lack of basic rights.
