One man was killed and another lightly wounded in a brazen shooting in broad daylight on a central Rehovot street Wednesday afternoon.
Both men were hit when a shooter opened fire from a passing car, Shfela subdistrict police said. By Wednesday evening Rehovot police had passed the investigation over to the Central District’s branch of the YAMAR investigative unit.
In the past few years there have been a number of attempted mob hits, including shooting attacks and car bombs in and around Rehovot, as crime gangs battle it out in the central city.
The shootings occurred in front of Hair Style, a salon on Herzl Street – on the portion of Rehovot’s main thoroughfare just south of the mall, and close to the Rehovot Police Station. Two hours after the shooting, blood still drenched the salon’s roadside patio.
In a video posted online by a bystander, one of the victims lies motionless on the ground in front of a felafel stand, and it appears that he had been eating there when he was gunned down.
Near the scene of the shooting, an 82-year-old female resident of the neighborhood, Sha’arayim, told The Jerusalem Post she is increasingly afraid to go outside at night. She called on the police to maintain a stronger presence in the neighborhood.
“I was born here – there was never an incident like this in Sha’arayim,” she said. “The police need to do more here in Rehovot.”
An employee of Birkat Hashem Pizza, across the street from the shooting, said: “We were here at the pizza place, there was just an explosion. We went outside and looked and saw a body on the ground.”
Just minutes after the shooting, Tel Aviv Police reported finding a man dead in his bed at his ground floor apartment on Revigo Street in south Tel Aviv.
The man, a Russian-Israeli in his 40s, showed signs of serious violence across his upper body, paramedics and police said.
Initially they said the man appeared to have been murdered, but shortly thereafter they said it was most likely a suicide.
