01/13/2009
IDF troops were advancing into Gaza City suburbs for the first time in more than two weeks of fighting with Hamas, Gaza Residents said early Tuesday morning. The sounds of the late-night battles could be heard around the city of 400,000. Residents said tanks rolled into public areas of the Tel Hawwa neighborhood, pushing back gunmen. Tens of thousands of Palestinians live in apartment buildings in the neighborhood south of Gaza City. The military confirmed that a battle was in progress early Tuesday but gave no details.
