Ruling expected on petition to disqualify Peres

The head of the Central Election Committee, Judge Dorit Banish, was expected to decide Wednesday whether or not to consider the petition submitted by the Labor Party in which the party requests to disqualify former Labor members Shimon Peres, Dalia Itzik and Haim Ramon from the Kadima party list. The question entered debate after Labor sued to erase the deserters' names from the Kadima list because they did not resign from the Knesset when they announced their resignation from the Labor faction. The decision by Itzik, Peres and Ramon to quit was due to an opinion offered by Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz that they would not be allowed to continue to hold ministerial positions in the current government, and out of a concern that they would also be unable to hold such positions in the incoming government.
