Obama assures Karzai no change in Afghan policy
By ASSOCIATED PRESS

The White House says President Barack Obama has spoken with Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai to assure him that the change in war command has no impact on US Afghanistan policy.

Obama informed Karzai in the call Wednesday of his decision to accept Gen. Stanley McChrystal's resignation and nominate Gen. David Petraeus to assume command of the Afghanistan war effort.

Obama underscored this would mean no change in the U.S. approach or level of commitment to Afghanistan, the White House said.

Karzai welcomed Petraeus' nomination and said he would act to support a successful transition, according to the White House.

McChrystal was out because of disparaging remarks he and aides made about their civilian leaders in a magazine article.
