Haifa on Wednesday initiated the "Crossing the Carmel" tunnel, which will eventually run 65 kilometers, Israel Radio reported.

The tunnel is expected to be used for the transfer of infrastructure for refineries, petrochemical companies, high risk materials, communications equipment and other essential materials

The tunnel will stretch from the refineries and the petrochemical factories along the gas depot near Haifa Port and the Carmel Mountain and continue on to the southern part of the city and Tirat Carmel.

The initiative was unveiled by Yifei Nof, a subsidiary of the Haifa Municipality, at an international conference for the city's infrastructure.
