Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz touted the government's economic achievements on Tuesday, hitting back against criticism against a package of tax hikes and budget cuts the government passed Monday night.

Speaking to Israel Radio, Steinitz said that under Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, the government had creaded 330,000 jobs, brought down unemployment, reduced the level of poverty, enacted a free education law from the age of three and built a fence with the Egyptian border.

"Israel is the only country whose credit rating was not lowered - that is not a failure," Steinitz said.  "The government is not running an election economy"

Those who supported the economic package acted responsibly, he said, because it protects the workplaces of the country's citizens.
