Syria has withdrawn at least several thousand of its troops from the Golan Heights western diplomats said, according to  a report in British newspaper The Guardian on Sunday. The redeployment near the Golan ceasefire line was the most significant in 40 years and the soldiers were moved to fronts closer to the capital Damascus, according to the report.

Last month, The UN Security Council voiced concern about repeated violations of the ceasefire line between Syria and the Golan Heights and the danger to UN peacekeepers there due to the escalating Syrian civil war.
