Cabel wants open primary in Labor

Labor leadership candidate says anyone should be able to vote in the upcoming primaries; no comment from Yacimovich.
Want to decide who the next leader of the Labor Party will be, but you don't want to join the party? Labor leadership candidate Eitan Cabel said that should not be a problem.

Cabel wrote Labor leader Shelly Yacimovich this week, urging her to initiate an open primary in the party in the election that is expected to be held at the beginning of 2014.

The party’s bylaws require a primary to be held within 14 months of a loss in a general election. That would make the deadline for the race to be held in March 2014.

Yacimovich is expected to be challenged by MKs Cabel, Isaac Herzog and Erel Margalit.

Cabel wrote Yacimovich that the time had come to start preparing for the race.

According to the proposal, anyone eligible to vote in an Israeli general election could vote in the primary. Cabel predicted that if the proposal was adopted, whoever would vote would become connected to the party.

“It is nonsense that thousands of Likudniks would care enough to come out to vote,” Cabel said. “If they wanted to vote, they could already join the party. Believe me, there is no conspiracy.”

Yacimovich’s office declined to comment on the proposal.
