Benedict Cumberbatch voices new documentary on Jerusalem
From Middle Earth to Middle East: The Hobbit and Sherlock Holmes star narrates a new documentary tracing the history of Judaism's holiest city

He might be instantly recognizable as Sherlock Holmes in the critically acclaimed BBC remake about the famous London detective, but Benedict Cumberbatch has doffed his deerstalker to narrate a new documentary about Jerusalem.

The 45-minute film traces the history of the city, following three of its young residents - a Jew, a Christian and Muslim.

This is not Cumberbatch's first voice-over role. He makes an appearance in the next installment of The Hobbit, where he will take on the part of Smaug the dragon, playing opposite his Sherlock sidekick Martin Freeman, who plays Bilbo Baggins.

The British heartthrob also played the role of antogonist in the summer's blockbuster Star Trek Into Darkness, and will appear as Julian Assange in the upcoming film about the WikiLeaks founder The Fifth Estate.

The documentary is reportedly set to come out in September.
