India: Deaths in Muslim-Hindu riots prompt curfew
Violence breaks out when Hindu extremists stop vehicle carrying cattle - considered holy by Hindus - to a slaughter house.
An attempt by Hindu extremists to stop the ritual slaughter of cows by Muslims triggered riots that killed two people in a southern Indian city, prompting authorities to impose a curfew, a news agency reported Sunday. The latest death resulting from Hindu-Muslim violence came overnight when a mob attacked an ambulance outside Mangalore, wounding six of the passengers, one of whom later succumbed to stab wounds inflicted during the incident, the Press Trust of India news agency reported, citing police. The earlier death occurred Friday, when a 26-year-old Muslim cleric named Abdul Gafoor died after being stabbed, presumably by Hindu extremists The violence first broke out late Thursday when Hindu extremists stopped a vehicle carrying cattle - considered holy by Hindus - to a slaughter house. The move prompted Hindus and Muslims in the city and surrounding areas to smash shops and attack each other. Soon after, police imposed a curfew in Mangalore and the surrounding district, lifting it for two hours on Sunday so residents could shop and take care of other business, PTI reported.
