United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement on Wednesday condemning a deadly synagogue attack in Jerusalem on Tuesday.

"The Secretary-General strongly condemned the attack yesterday in a synagogue in Israel which claimed five lives and injured several persons. He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery," said the statement, which was read to reporters at the UN headquarters in New York by Ban's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric.

Two Palestinians armed with a meat cleaver and a gun killed five people in a Jerusalem synagogue on Tuesday before being shot dead by police.
