The Zionist Union leadership continued its saber-rattling over the weekend, with one of its top deputies vowing to “make life hell” for the newly installed Netanyahu government.

During a town hall appearance in Ramat Gan on Saturday, Zionist Union MK Itzik Shmuli said that his party would “fight the Netanyahu government which turned its election victory into a series of extortionist agreements with coalition partners who have made a mockery of the public interest.”

Nonetheless, Shmuli did say that any government measure that would improve the socioeconomic lot of the country’s weaker constituencies would be supported by the opposition.

Shmuli, who won fourth place in the Labor Party primary and who is already being touted by some as a possible challenger to Isaac Herzog for the chairmanship, told the assembled crowd that many of the new government’s position is not supported by most Israelis.

“A majority of the public opposes canceling conscription for the ultra-Orthodox,” he said. “A majority is opposed to funneling money to the settlements and the yeshivas and nurturing a separate, sectarian educational system at the expense of the public education system.”

Shmuli appealed to Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, urging him to cancel these measures.

The 35-year-old deputy predicted “war” for this Knesset.

“There’s going to be a lot of sleepless nights in the plenum,” Shmuli said. “We are going to tire out this government.”
