Report: Abbas steps up efforts for summit
12/23/2006
Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has stepped up efforts to resume peace talks with Israel. Abbas' aides have met repeatedly with advisers to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to work out the terms of a summit, which would be the first between Israeli and Palestinian leaders in a year and a half. Israel Radio reported Saturday that Olmert's aides expect the meeting to take place in the coming week, but that no date has been set. The Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, said the two sides have made progress, but tried to lower expectations. "This meeting is a humble attempt to see if it's possible to even rebuild trust," he said.
