Mazuz to Kotel Rabbi: Allow mixed tunnel tours
DAN IZENBERG
03/28/2007
Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz on Wednesday ordered the Western Wall Legacy Fund and the rabbi of the Western Wall to permit mixed tours of the tunnels below the wall during the Pessah holiday. Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz and Mordechai Eliav had recently announced that they would not allow men and women to tour the tunnels together because many observant Jews like to pray during the tour in those days. Mazuz wrote that, "the Western Wall tunnels are a national-historic site which belongs to all the Jewish people and it is unjustifiable to exclusively impose the customs or restrictions of one sector or another." He also pointed out that the tunnel operations were largely funded by the government.
