In an era dominated by fleeting digital moments and social media saturation, MixPlaces emerges as a visionary force in the realm of preserving memories.
This unique platform transcends the traditional photo book concept, blending cutting-edge technology with artistic ingenuity to create bespoke works of emotional resonance.
Unlike conventional photo albums, MixPlaces' photo books go beyond the mere compilation of images – they craft narratives, weaving in the metadata in photos to create deeply personalized artworks.
MixPlaces: Where Art & Tech Collide
MixPlaces, at its core, is a platform fueled by a proprietary algorithm, ingeniously designed to transform your favorite moments into lasting, visually stunning art pieces.
The platform seeks to empower its users to create one-of-a-kind wall art, and more impressively, photo books, that completely revolutionize the notions we all may have about the practice of keeping tangible mementos.
Upon hearing about this startup, my ears perked up, and more importantly, dozens of questions flooded my mind. So I got in contact with them to see if anyone over there would be willing to answer my inquiries. Spoiler alert: they responded almost right away
Meet the Founder
When I contacted the company, I thought I'd get to hop on a call with a communications liaison, or maybe a PR or marketing associate. But they did me one much, much better.
As a matter of fact, Adam Mizrahi, the founder and CEO of MixPlaces himself, got back to me, asking to meet for an informal interview over some coffee. So I scheduled a meeting a week from that day, giving me plenty of time to do my own research and come up with a dozen more questions for him to answer.
He showed up wearing a comic book t-shirt, with his wife and toddler, both of whom sat at our table and one of whom won the prize for cutest kid at coffee shop (by far!). From the first glance, I would’ve believed you if you said this guy was really into tech. He seemed like the type to own every drone, camera, and computer ever featured on WIRED.
But lovey-dovey, emotionally fluffy stuff, like making photo books and art from people’s greatest memories? I didn't know about that. So, like any good writer, I asked about it.
Life Experience to the Point of Invention
“I’ve lived what I consider a pretty memorable life. I’ve traveled around the world and lived unique experiences— on my own, with friends, with my wife, and with my daughter. I've been to Burning Man, backpacked through Asia, seen four of the seven Wonders of the World. One time, I even jumped a fence and snuck into the Colosseum!” he laughs.
“I've traveled to over 50 countries, lived unforgettable moments, and that passion that I feel for experiencing— for living— it stays with me all the time, even when I can't be out and about doing the things I want to do. That's what MixPlaces was born from. A passion for remembering life’s greatest moments.”
“When my daughter was born,” he continues, glancing over at the little girl’s giggles, “My wife and I wanted to capture every second of her existence. Every new experience she had; her first time traveling, her first steps, her first time trying ice cream, all of it. I wanted to keep every single second of her experiencing and enjoying her life fresh in my memory.
“I’ve had this idea cooking in my head for a long, long time. I’ve had all these experiences and I kept thinking, ‘Man, I wish there was a cooler, fresher way to remember these crazy moments than just looking at the pictures I took.’ But when she was born, that's when I knew this idea could really be something. Nothing, not even seeing the Northern Lights in person, could ever compare to seeing her girl smile.
“I thought of all the people who probably felt just like me, having all these incredible experiences and not knowing what to do with them. So, I put on my thinking cap, grabbed a group of excellent developers and designers, and got to work.”
MixPlaces' first official customer, he recalls, was his wife, who created a photo book of their little girl’s first ever visit to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. And thus MixPlaces was born, out of a love for life so strong, that it led to invention.
The Emotional Drive in Tech
In an age where every aspect of our lives becomes increasingly digitized, the need for humanity and emotion in tech has never been more pronounced. MixPlaces, and everyone who works there, keeps this same notion in mind, every step of the way.
“We wanted to give people a way to reconnect with their best memories— a way for them to reimagine them in a way they’d never even thought about,” says Mizrahi, “That's what we use our technology for, to help our users create tangible art pieces, whether in the form of wall art or photo books, from the moments that made them happiest.”
The emotional drive behind MixPlaces is evident in its commitment to transforming heartfelt memories into extraordinary ways to enhance each and every moment with the use of hidden data, breathing life into each pixel of their customers' cherished memories.
The intersection of technology and emotion is a delicate dance, and MixPlaces choreographs it masterfully. The platform becomes a conduit for emotional expression, allowing users to infuse their memories with a newfound depth that transcends the limitations of conventional photo books.
The Pièce de Résistance: MixPlaces Photo Books
At the heart of MixPlaces' allure lies its transformative photo books. Far from being mere repositories of images, these books are immersive experiences, intricately designed to resonate with the emotions encapsulated in your memories.
The proprietary algorithm created by MixPlaces takes the metadata embedded in their customers' images and transforms it into custom street maps, star maps, and coordinates art, directly correlated to the moments captured in their photos.
That's what makes MixPlaces different from other photo book makers.
“These are more than just photo books, they’re ways for you and your loved ones to connect to the moments that brought you close. Sure, you know you went to Disney World and that your kid absolutely loved it, but do you remember the exact route you walked around the park? Do you remember what the stars looked like as you watched the fireworks over the castle? That's what MixPlaces does, it’s what we are. A place you can go to find all the little details that make your memories unforgettable that you might have missed in that moment.”
The Algorithm: Looking Beyond the Emotional
The MixPlaces algorithm may seem like magic, but if you ask Mizrahi and his team, it was more like a labor of love. “We worked for months and months and months to perfect every little detail and tweak every little corner of our algorithm to make it what it is today,” he states.
“We’re still working to make more improvements, even now. Every day, someone comes up with a new idea on how to make our photo books better. ‘Maybe we can do this or include that,' and we just kind of talk about it as a team. The team consult their partners, their friends, each other. I consult my wife all the time, trying to figure out how to improve little things that make the biggest differences at the end of the day.”
His wife looks at me with a grinning nod, as if to say, He’s not lying. I’ve heard about this photo book more than anyone.
The Mortal Explanation: Metadata for Dummies
But how exactly does the algorithm work, what even is metadata?
“Well, to put things simply, metadata is just hidden information that’s already present in everyone’s pictures. Your phone timestamps all your pictures, that's how it knows to organize your camera roll chronologically. It also marks the exact places you take your pictures,” explains the founder.
“All we do is take that information, information that's available to any site where you upload photos, and bring it into the light. From there, all our algorithm does is plug that information into our servers and bam, you’ve got a street map or star map or coordinates art from one of your favorite days ever
Trip Books, Places Books, & Milestones Books
According to my research, this photo book service can also arrange your photos for you, meaning you don't have to spend an hour figuring out how to organize a hundred or more pictures for your photo book. So I asked about that, too.
“We have three different types of photo books: trip books, places books, and milestone books. Trip books are obviously meant for people to commemorate their travels, and they're organized by days, months, and years. Every chapter in this book is a different place they visited, and the photos in the chapter are arranged chronologically.
“The second type, places books, organizes your images based on where they were taken. So, for example, if you fly to Europe and land in London, go off to Paris, Rome, and Porto, and then come back to London, every picture you took in London, whether it was at the beginning or at the end of your trip, will be grouped together by location and sorted alphabetically. So, London would appear before Paris, Porto before Rome, and so on and so forth.
“The third type of book we offer, a milestones book, is meant to help people celebrate the milestones they’ve reached—marriages, wedding anniversaries, births of children, PHDs, whatever milestone you can think of. These books are organized by time. For a 10 year anniversary, for example, the book would have 10 chapters, one for every year of marriage, and each chapter would lay out what the couple did or experienced in that year.”
Art & Accessibility
MixPlaces not only harnesses the power of art and technology to create powerful mementos, but also ensures that this creative potential is accessible to all. The platform's user-friendly interface empowers users to create meaningful, professional-grade art without the need for a graphic design degree.
“That's another thing we wanted to accomplish,” Mizrahi says between sips of coffee, “We want this platform to be accessible to everyone who wants to use it. We want people to be able to create custom art for and about themselves without having any extensive knowledge on graphic design or a background in art or anything like that.
“This platform is designed for travelers and parents and people who live busy lives and maybe can’t spent hours or days working on something they really, really want to make and have in their house. That's also why we have an app in addition to our website, so that anyone can make their prints or photo books from anywhere in the world, from where they happen to find a few minutes to themselves to look back on all their most cherished memories.
“It’s also the reason we ship to like, more than 150 countries and partner up with hundreds local printers to keep delivery times short.”
MixPlaces: The New Horizon in Custom Creations
What began as a personal quest to immortalize the fleeting moments of a life well-lived blossomed into MixPlaces – a manifestation of a love for life to the point of invention, now available for anyone’s use. Adam Mizrahi's vision extends beyond conventional photo books; it's a journey to reconnect with cherished memories in ways previously unimagined.
At the heart of MixPlaces' allure lies its proprietary algorithm, born out of months of meticulous labor, which merges the worlds of art and technology to provide users with art derived from the metadata embedded in their photos.
But MixPlaces isn't just about algorithms and metadata; it's about leveraging technology and art to help its users create tangible mementos that elevate their most precious memories. And with Mizrahi’s team on an eternal quest for self-improvement, I, as many others out there, am excited to find out what’s next.
“We’ve got many things in the works, and we’re planning on scaling our operations within the next year,” he concludes, “I can't reveal much, but let’s just say that if you wanted your coffee to go, I know of a place you could custom-make a travel mug to take with you.”
