The appeal committee of European basketball's governing body turned down an appeal by the Israel Basketball Association to allow the national team to host its upcoming Eurobasket 2007 qualifiers in Israel. "We are extremely disappointed with this decision," IBA official Yehuda Shikma told The Jerusalem Post. "Tel Aviv is one of the safest cities in the world, but FIBA Europe has taken away our right to host these important games." The committee's deliberations had been scheduled for Wednesday, but Maccabi Tel Aviv president Shimon Mizrahi persuaded FIBA Europe officials to discuss the issue on Monday. The national team will "host" Thursday night's game against Bosnia-Herzegovina and the game against Portugal September 6 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The yellow-and-blue have an away game versus Macedonia on September 3.
