Games We Play: Women's flag football season gets under way

In its second season, the 5-on-5 non contact league grew quickly and includes about 100 players.

The 2005/06 Fieldturf Women's American Football in Israel season began last week with a record 10 teams. In its second fall/winter season, the five-on-five non contact league has grown quickly and now includes about 100 players. On the first day of games, Big Blue and Ziontours recorded convincing wins. Big Blue 51, Eden's Eagles 0 Yael Freedman scored Big Blue's first four touchdowns, including an interception return. After Michal Berns opened the second half with an interception, Ahuva Oddenheimer scored a touchdown. In her first game, Sara Shemesh recorded an INT. Freedman then stepped in for starting quarterback Shana Sprung and threw Sprung a TD pass. Techiya Granot tiptoed into the endzone after she intercepted an Eden's Eagles pass. Big Blue capped the scoring in the last few seconds when Freedman threw another TD pass to Davida. Ziontours 24, Cafe Rimon 0 Ziontours QB Cindy Scarr threw a touchdown pass to Esti Mandel, and converted two extra points to Ora Blank and Yael Hartman. Mandel also ran back an interception for a TD. Also in the first week of the Fieldturf WAFI, it was: Cincinnati Friends 33, Boston Friends 0; Jump Gym 19, Pueblo Nuevo Productions 6; and Diamonds 12, Misha'an Plumbers 12. Twelve teams remain undefeated in men's league After week 4 of the Heritage Affinity AFI men's contact league, 12 teams are still undefeated. World Class Travel, Lobos, The Out-of-Towners and Misha'an Plumbing all recorded victories on Friday and are all at 3-0 after playing half of their games in the first round of the regular season. World Class Travel surged to the top of the standings following a 70-0 rout of Israel 21C, which gives the team a 143-12 overall point differential. While 3-0 teams Tov Pizza, D & D Marketing, D & D Sugar and CardiaCare Rehab had byes this weekend, Pizzeria Efrat, Yesodei.org and Big Blue all won Saturday night to improve their records to 3-0. Tov Pizza still tops the Saturday night standings with a 139-7 point differential. Tuesday night co-ed league results In the second week of the Tuesday night co-ed league, Kfar Zippori (2-0) defeated HUC/Billy Tiep (0-1) 33-14 and Pardes (1-1) recorded a 14-0 victory over HUC-YA (0-2). The two Hebrew Union College teams will face off in a school "derby" on Tuesday at Kraft Family Stadium in Jerusalem.
