IDT Global Services scored 13 points in the first half and never trailed against The Jewish Press to claim the Yosef Goodman High School AFI spring championship with a 35-14 victory on Monday at Kraft Family Stadium in Jerusalem. The Jewish Press scored a touchdown on its first possession of the second half to make it 13-7 and again in the final minutes of the game, but IDT's 22 unanswered points put the game out of reach. IDT quarterback Yedidya Rothner was just as poised in the final as he was all season long, throwing for five touchdown passes. His brother and team captain, Moshe Rothner, caught three touchdowns while Dan Schnell caught the other two. On defense, Leor Sak was dominant with seven sacks and one safety. "The league was named for Yosef Goodman, a Gush Etzion resident who was tragically killed in an IDF training accident a few months ago," said league coordinator Josh Hasten at the trophy presentation ceremony. "It was Yosef who helped start this league and it is fitting that a team from Gush Etzion won the title in the first season that the league bore his name." In the semifinals last Wednesday, both teams recorded upsets. IDT, seeded third, edged the second-seeded Levine Family Chashmo Jaguars 20-18, and the fifth-seeded Jewish Press squad knocked out the top seed, Tover'z Boyz, 14-13 in overtime. Nadlan City shocks Burgers Bar in women's championship game In the Women's American Football in Israel Spring Tournament championship game last week, Nadlan City - City Girls upset top-seeded Burgers Bar 13-12. Nadlan quarterback Aviva Gershon led the way with two touchdown passes, one to Ahuva Odenheimer and the other to Emily Neilson. Neilson and sister Sarah, along with Yael Hartman and Racheli Silverman, contributed on defense, pulling flags, and pressuring the Burgers Bar quarterbacks all night long. Trailing 13-6 with seven minutes remaining, Burgers Bar marched down the field and scored a touchdown to make the score 13-12. Burgers Bar attempted a two-point conversion but the stout Nadlan defense held, allowing the City Girls to take over with just three minutes remaining. Burgers Bar stopped Nadlan on four straight plays and took over possession with a minute remaining. However, Nadlan came up big once again, not allowing Burgers Bar to advance past midfield. After the final whistle, the Nadlan players and all their fans mobbed the field in celebration.
