Maccabi candidate replaces Zvi Varshaviak atop OCI; vows to "unite all the forces in the country" to promote sports in Israel.

Igal Carmi was elected as the new Olympic Committee of Israel president on Sunday.Following 16 years at the helm, Zvi Varshaviak announced that he will step down in January and Maccabi candidate, Carmi, was voted in as his successor after Hapoel candidate, Ze’ev Bielski, pulled out of the race."We are embarking on a new road," said the 59-year-old Carmi, who is also the President & CEO of Tadiran Batteries. ‘It is our responsibility to unite all the forces in the country and work together to promote sports in Israel."The OCI’s first decision under Carmi was to set up a sports committee headed by Barcelona 1992 silver medalist, Yael Arad, which will work in cooperation with Israel’s Elite Sport Department.
