Israel nearly eliminated from World Cup tournament

Israel must now cross their fingers and hope that lowly Cyprus beat France in Paris on Wednesday.

Israel's chances of advancing to the next round of the World Cup tournament all but disappeared early Sunday morning despite the national team's 2-1 triumph over the Faroe Islands. The blue-and-whites' fate seemed to have been sealed in later games between France and Switzerland, which ended in a 1-1 tie, and between Cyprus and Ireland, in which Cyprus was shut-out 1-0 after Ireland scored in a penalty kick. Israel must now cross their fingers and hope that lowly Cyprus beat France in Paris on Wednesday.
