In a surprisng move, State Cup winner and Premier League runner-up Hapoel Tel Aviv announced Saturday night that Dror Kashtan will replace Eli Gutman as head coach next season.
The 66-year-old Kashtan coached at Bnei Yehuda last year and helmed the national team the year before.
Many observers believed that Hapoel owner Eli Tabib would tab former Hapoel midfielder Yossi Abuksis as the successor to Gutman, who left Hapoel when the season ended.
“I’m pleased to report that Dror Kashtan will coach Hapoel Tel Aviv,” Tabib said in a statement. “He was quite enthusiastic, and the negotiations took less than five minutes.”
