Tennis: Pe'er falls to Dementieva in three sets at Rogers Cup

21-year-old Israeli trailed 4-1 in the third set, but came back to tie the score, only for the Russian to eventually advance to the quarterfinals by taking the final two games.

Despite a valiant effort, Shahar Pe'er was knocked out in the third round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Thursday, losing 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 to world number 5 Elena Dementieva. The 21-year-old Israeli, who dropped to number 68 in the world earlier this week, trailed 4-1 in the third set, but came back to tie the score, only for the Russian to eventually advance to the quarterfinals by taking the final two games. Meanwhile, Roger Federer didn't let a tricky wind blow him away. The world's No. 1 player struggled in blustery conditions Thursday against a player he has dominated throughout his career. A 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Spain's David Ferrer put him in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters. Federer had an uncharacteristic 35 unforced errors against Ferrer, who is 0-9 career against the Swiss star and has won only two sets in those matches. Later Thursday, Andy Ram and Max Mirnyi faced number 1 seeds Bob and Mike Bryan in the second round of the doubles tournament in Cincinnati. The Israeli/Belrusian duo, which defeated Jesse Levine and Rajeev Ram 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, beat the Bryans just last week in the semifinals in Montreal. AP contributed to this report
