Tzipi Obziler rises in WTA rankings

The 34-year-old Israeli leaps 17 places to No. 78 after reaching the second round of the French Open last week.

Tzipi Obziler climbed to a career best No. 78 in the WTA rankings on Monday. The 34-year-old Israeli leapt 17 places from the previous rankings after reaching the second round of the French Open last week. Obziler reached the last 64 at Roland Garros for the first time in her career, defeating Hungarian Melinda Czink in the first round. The Israeli lost her second round match to world No. 12 Dinara Safina. Obziler will return to action next week at the qualifiers of the Ordina Open in the Netherlands. Regardless of the result she achieves in Holland the Israeli is guaranteed a place in the main draw of Wimbledon, which is set to begin on June 25. Shahar Pe'er moved up one place in the rankings, climbing to 16th position. The 20-year-old, who reached the fourth round of the French Open for a second straight year, will play at the International Women's Open in Eastbourne, England which begins next Monday. Anna Smashnova dropped 31 places to No. 166 on Monday and is expected to play her final professional match at Wimbledon. Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich, who remain in seventh place in the ATP doubles race, will also return to action next week and will be looking to defend their Nottingham Open title.
