The new-look Morningside Translations Warriors kicked off the 2011 modified-pitch softball league in style, cruising by the Beit Shemesh Suns 15-12 at Gezer on Thursday.Looking to reclaim a title lost last year, the team previously known as CleanTech looked impressive after a slow start. The Warriors looked shaky as the Suns scored five in the top of the first.But Warriors pitcher Avi Dzik got into a groove and was helped out by some key defensive plays in the field.Morningside then charged back to score 15 unanswered runs, holding the Suns scoreless until a late seventhinning, seven-run rally that got the Beit Shemesh squad back to within three.Shortstop Joe Federman and third baseman Yaniv Tsaidi led the Warrior offense with three hits apiece.Gershon Jacobovitch, Yanky Itzkowitz and Aron Heller each added a pair of hits and a sparkling play in the field.Itzkowitz scored three times in his Warrior debut and the veteran Heller knocked in three runs.“It’s great to come out and send a strong message in the opener,” Heller, the team manager, said.“After all the offseason changes and the new team management it was important for us to show that we are still the same old winning Warriors.”
