China accuses the Dalai Lama of being a separatist who supports the use of violence to set up an independent Tibet. Obama said that while the US does consider Tibet to be a part of China, he reiterated the need for protecting human rights for Tibetans there. Earlier this year, the Dalai Lama relinquished his political responsibilities. A Harvard educated law scholar was elected to take his place.
